Verity Rules the Box Office With $32.6M While Cruise's Digger Face-Plants
Anne Hathaway's thriller opens huge. Tom Cruise's $125 million political comedy opens to $8 million. Somebody's having a great weekend and it isn't Tom.
Okay, this weekend at the movies was WILD. Verity — the R-rated psychological thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, adapted from Colleen Hoover's novel — ripped open to an estimated $32.6 million in North America, per Rentrak. That's more than the next two movies combined. Add another $30 million internationally and you're looking at a $62.6 million worldwide debut. For a mid-budget thriller, that is a victory lap.
And then there's Digger. Tom Cruise's big pivot — a dark political comedy from Alejandro González Iñárritu about the most powerful man in the world trying to prove he's humanity's savior — dug up a measly $8 million domestic against a roughly $125 million production budget. Fifth place. Behind Primetime. Audiences, to put it gently, did not dig it.
The full top five
1. Verity (Amazon MGM) — $32.6M 2. Resident Evil (Sony) — $12.5M 3. Heart of the Beast (Paramount) — $11.0M 4. Primetime (A24) — $8.0M 5. Digger (Warner Bros.) — $8.0M
The silver lining for theaters: the year-to-date domestic box office is now around $7.95 billion, up nearly 20% over 2025. One bomb doesn't sink a boom year — but Warner Bros. is definitely going to feel this one, since Digger was its final release before the Paramount acquisition closed.
